Non-rev dress code: what to wear flying standby
4 min read
Many airlines have a staff-travel dress code. Learn what to wear (and avoid) when flying standby, and how dressing well can help upgrades.
When you fly non-rev, you're traveling as a representative of your airline — even off duty. That's why many carriers still enforce a staff-travel dress code. Dressing appropriately keeps you compliant and can even help your chances of a better seat.
The general rule: smart-casual and tidy
Even where rules have relaxed, the safe target is neat, clean, smart-casual clothing that wouldn't look out of place in a business-class cabin. When in doubt, dress one notch above what you'd wear for a casual revenue flight.
Usually fine
- Collared shirts, blouses, smart knitwear;
- Chinos, dark jeans (clean, no rips), tailored trousers, smart dresses or skirts;
- Clean closed-toe shoes, smart trainers, loafers;
- A blazer or smart jacket — easy way to lift any outfit.
Often not allowed
- Ripped, dirty, or heavily distressed denim;
- Shorts, gym/athletic wear, leggings as trousers;
- Flip-flops, slides, or beachwear;
- Visible offensive slogans or graphics;
- Overly revealing clothing.
Rules vary by airline, cabin, and even route — always check your airline's current staff-travel policy, and remember that an interline partner's rules may differ from your own.
Dress code and upgrades
On flights where premium cabins have space, non-revs are sometimes seated up front. A polished appearance makes that easier for the crew to justify — so dressing well isn't just about rules, it can mean a more comfortable flight when the loads work in your favor.
If you're traveling on someone's benefit
Guests and buddy-pass travelers are held to the same standard. You're representing the employee who shared their benefit, so dress the part out of respect for them.
